Have you heard - Other Universities have good email systems

Written by

I know I am always nagging and going on about how crappy the UH email system is but really this is a sad situation.

I personally resist logging into it, all my classmates email me directly from their personal accounts to my personal account, I have several professional addresses that I use to communicate as a professional (obviously) and here I have this one email account that not only will not let me choose my password but doesn’t have a remember feature should I forget my password, but doesn’t have a single basic directory of email addresses e.g. helpdesk, info, student support, etc..

Anyway for a while now there has been a be-spoke system that is being offered on the cheap and that is Google’s Gmail.

Google has offered their email service to more than a few Universities and Colleges for a long time now and maybe one day someone at UH will realise they may benefit from a far superior infrastructure and engineered platform.

Does anyone even know how big our email accounts are or how big a file they (UH) will allow us to email?

Yes, the web-based interface is crap. But you can always use POP3 or IMAP and an email client (such as Thunderbird or MS Outlook, the POP3 can be used in Gmail, too). The unfortunate thing is that I only found out this after I graduated from UH. :(
